The life of a designer can be a strange one sometimes
Aug 2011 16

Having been asked to embark on a new logo design for friend Scot Baston over at Zooming Feet, I was left initially with a very open brief which is often a designer’s nightmare.
You see, often a client will actually have little idea about which direction they would like their branding to take or indeed how they want to be portrayed by the world and potential future customer. It’s my job to get inside my client’s head, advise on and interpret their vision, however vague that initial concept is and commissions don’t get any more inside someone’s head than this one.

Design is my passion. It’s not work to me. I love what I do and am lucky enough to be able to earn a living doing something I really enjoy. I value the fact that I can influence the success of my clients by raising the profile of their business and helping them reach their potential.

In this new technological age despite being based in the Westcountry peninsular, I am lucky enough to have clients all over the country and the globe including, Europe, the Middle East and Indonesia. Proving indeed that location is no longer an issue with the help of effective communication.

Photography could easily be described as my guilty pleasure. There is little I love more than standing on the top of a breezy cliff shooting the beautiful coastline in Devon or buzzing around enjoying the magic of a wedding day, capturing those special moments that make a day so special.

DIY…do you?
Aug 2011 30

It seems we live in a DIY society these days…it started with decorating and DIY mechanics, bringing about the rise of brands such as Homebase and the good old Haynes Manuals, but whether you consider yourself handy with a hammer or not, we are ALL guilty of this trend in one way or another, more so than ever in challenging economic times. The combination of an inquisitive mind and the desire to save a few bob leads us into temptation to have a crack at tasks ourselves that we are not qualified to attempt. [..]

Flexible affordable vehicle signage
Aug 2011 30

Vehicle livery is now more versatile than ever and I am pleased to announce a new service and product to my customers.

You may think that getting your commercial vehicle signwritten is beyond your budget, or what about if you drive a car for business?, or what about if you have both? [..]

The True Value of Twitter
Aug 2011 30
I was chatting a while ago to a fellow businesswoman about the benefits of Twitter and the amount of time we all spend tweeting.
She was telling me that she had hired a Business Mentor who had quizzed her on the amount of business she gained from Twitter and we were comparing notes to that effect. We both agreed that orders obtained through Twitter whilst valued were by no means a dominant contribution to our business turnover. This admission lead to the Mentor lecturing my fellow tweeter that the amount of time she spent on Twitter was disproportionate to the financial reward she obtained in return. [..]
My Summer of Love
Nov 2011 20

It’s fair to say that this summer has been filled with love…in a professional sense anyway!

Living in a relatively small community as a photographer, it’s inevitable that you will be asked to shoot as wedding for someone you know. Personally I find this a real pleasure and whilst the pressure is no less than shooting for a stranger, at least the worry of forming a rapport with your clients is reduced.

My Student Guide to Building a Career

In the beginning there was spray mount!!

Work experience is key and I was 13……keen as mustard and naive!

I wouldn’t be where I am without taking on lots and lots of work experience. As valuable as education is…real hands on experience in a functioning business is crucial in my opinion. [..]

Deadlines Friend or Foe?

I have been thinking alot about deadlines recently….everyone knows that a designer’s life is ruled by timescales and deadlines but it struck me that not everyone is as used to working within a timeframe in the same way as I am. So I wondered what advice I could give to help others reach their targets. [..]

Autumnal Family Photoshoot in People’s Park, Tiverton
Nov 2012 13

One family…one set of twins…lots of leaves and a Roxy!

The beautiful People’s Park in Tiverton, Devon was the location for a recent family shoot.

With three strapping lads and pet dog Roxy, it was decided that our studio would be a little cramped for this commission and a location shoot was the order of the day!

Women’s Business Network Event Photography

I was asked recently to conduct a number of shoots for Devon Air Ambulance, one of the most enjoyable was a Women’s Business Networking evening hosted by Old Mill Accountants & Financial Planners and Cosmic Ethical IT, held at the Exeter Golf and Country Club. [..]
